Winter Cup deadline approaching
Registration closes January 9nth for the annual CGA online tournament. The event is 6 rounds with two games every three weeks, and serves as the CGA ING/Masters qualifier. Byes are available on request for those with scheduling conflicts (Long vacations, exam weeks, etc). We already have more players registered (39) than the previous largest Winter Cup which had 36 players in 2007. I'm hoping we'll be past 50 by the time registation closes. All tournament info can be found here, including who is currently registered (updated daily), so if you notice your friends are missing please encourage them.
CGA membership hits 200
The CGA membership has hit 200 in December. The last time that happened was in 1991-1992, when it hit a high of 206. I'm hoping by the time Winter Cup registration closes we can surpass this. I don't have access to registration numbers from the 70's and 80's, but we are likely approaching the all time high. See here for some membership history.
The club membership program, a successful 2008 Canadian Open, and easier online registration have clearly been key to this success, but I hope the membership's desire to support CGA program like the youth starter kits and program grants are also inspiring Canadian Go players to support the CGA. We'd like to be doing more, and we could use your help. See here for some ideas on what your could do, or email volunteer@go-canada.org to discuss how you can help.
AGA-CGA youth friendship match
The AGA has organized a friendship match, where three top Canadian youths (5D-7D) will face off against their USA counterparts. The tournament will be help on Sunday January 11nth 2009, 1PM PST(10am EST), in KGS's AGA tournament room. Several hundred observers are expected; a great way to kick off 2009! Watch the CGA homepage and the AGA E-Journal for updates.
Pairings:
1) Gansheng Shi versus Andy Liu
2) Daniel Gourdeau versus Ricky Zhao
3) Patrick Lung versus Calvin Sun
Ideas on teaching Go
Bob Halstead has written up his approach to teaching beginners. He reports good success with this, and I know this is something we all struggle with.
